Boston Stacks Up at the Microsoft Store!
by Tanner Hastings
The Boston chapter of the Stacks on-the-ground Call to Arms event had a bit of a shaky start. Out of the 6 Stack members interested in attending, only 3 (including Ben and myself) managed to make it. There was a bit of miscommunication between us and the store, so we couldn’t secure copies of the new COD WW2 game that released last week, which dissuaded a few potential players from participating.
That said, after an hour of trickling interest in the event, we hit some steady waves of players coming to see the booth! One of the younger contestants even had a father who’s a veteran, and he showed some strong interest in volunteering for future events! Another contestant plans on joining the Marines in the near future, and Adam (Discord name “Boxcar”) struck up a long conversation with him and his group of friends.
The last group of players were so into the tournament that they promised to return the next day, when the Microsoft store would be holding its weekly League of Legends matches. They didn’t play LoL or even know what it was; the gift card prizes were all they needed to understand!
By the time we started to clean up for the night, the Microsoft store had given away over $100 in prizes and earned Stack-Up a triple-digit figure in donations, thanks to the volunteering of employees like Josh and the gaming manager Lee. We got more publicity than expected, and even caught some interest from a card-carrying veteran!
Although the donations most likely won’t reach Stack-Up’s account before Call to Arms ends, it will be heading our way in the near future. Most importantly, the volunteers had a lot of fun, and are looking forward to holding a similar (but bigger!) event in early 2018.
